Gheral Brownlow July 3rd 10K results!

                                 Gheral Browlow 10K

Another July 4th weekend 10K in the books and the Mountain Milers had a terrific turnout this year with 22 runner’s. Some of racers had their share of injury’s before and during the race. Ken Ekman had a virus thing going on, Steve Orth ran with a sprained ankle, Kameron Hott with a bone spur on his heel.  Kam still set a 10K P.R anyway.

I was on track for a new P.R. until 3/4 of a mile left when I over extended my left knee on the last long down grade and proceeded to set my worst time.  Our newest runner Deborah Kathan in her first cross country 10k ran a remarkable time. Veronica Zelman had to sit out with a fractured left ankle, hopefully she will be back to at least walk the 5k at Willow Lake in "Run for the Creeks" 8/28.

Mike Zengel out with an Achilles tendon also on the no run mend was on the course with Julie Munsell taking pictures. John Killian once again was the runner of the day with a 35:15.

The following are club members and "close" friends of the Mountain Milers times overall. Go to www. Ceptiming.com for actual place and age group.

Deborah Kathan completes first marathon and ultra - finishes 3rd at the FANS in Minnesota!
Written by Ken Ekman

Deb Kathan who has not walked more more than 6 miles as far as any of us know, completed 33.1 miles in the 12 hour walk category in the FANS 24/12 hour race in Minneapolis over the weekend finishing 3rd overall!!  She basically covered her first marathon and ultra all in one shot and walked away unscathed.  She now plans to run the 12 hour version next year.

Indeed it is likely that she would have logged more miles and potentially finished 2nd as the first 9 hours of the race included a non-stop relentless rain plus she got bogged down by visitors.  Her last hour was also a bit of a mess as she stayed with me and the para-medics when I went light-headed shortly after reaching 50 miles under 10:30.   My day ended rather abruptly at 52.5 miles.

Brother Jeff Kathan who has completed 6 straight Whiskey Row marathons walked with Deb for the entire time.  Jeff also aborted his 24 hour version abruptly to aid me.  Jeff kept telling Deb that the porta-potties are 'just around the bend".  I think she was tired of hearing that, seeing the runner in the loin cloth and no shirt (LOL) and the jokes from Fast Eddie from Bovey, MN.

Another ultra in the books for all us...it is sure good to be back home.  If you think your allergies are bad here...take a trip to Minnesota!  LOL

Newsflash

I am sure most all of you have heard that Gheral Brownlow passed on Monday 3/24.  For stories on Gheral go to www.dcourier.com and put "brownlow" in the search field.

We lost one of our Prescott running mates and the man who started most of the local races.  Steve Orth and I were lucky enough to meet with Gheral just 14 days prior to his passing.   He still looked and sounded super.

If our running club has a goal, it should be to make sure that Gheral is not forgotten by making sure that the races here stay intact.   He will be missed.  Services info:

A vigil service and time of sharing will be 6 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Prescott.

A mass and Celebration of Life service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Church in Prescott, Ariz.
