Tucson marathon results!!!

OK, it was an awesome day in Tucson but before I get into Rob Turpin's top 15 finish, I need to acknowledge a couple of our past members, Kathy Dahl ran a super 4:31 marathon and finished 4th in her age group!  Serena Lackey ran a 3:29 and won her age class (of 22!).

Down in Phoenix Dan Munsell and Deb Cowell finished 3rd in the "Muddy Buddy" and Steve Orth/Jessica Leary finshed something like 15th in their doubles event race.

Back to Rob..inspite of several things stacking up against Rob, he ran terrific.  He chose to ride down with me and my entourage (even though I dropped out due to a late foot injury) and he was a trooper as the group wanted to go shopping all day and had a late dinner.  Then the winds came up in during the race, basically in the face for miles 16-24...fairly strong especially miles 20-24 as Rob was really picking off the competition.  When we first got to him, he was at mile 14 and probably had a hundred runners in front him.  80 for sure.  Probably a 100.

Rob was hanging with 5 or 6 in the fastest pace group - the 3:00 pace group.  As we worked our way down every few miles to pick Rob up again, the pack kept diminishing until at mile 21 it was basically Rob, the pacerand fate would add a guy that I talked to that smoked Man vs. Horse this fall as he (Chris) joined the pace group with Rob. Chris amazingly sat next to Rob on the bus to the start!  Small world since there were some 1400 runners in the marathon.

Looking fresh everytime we saw him, mile 21 was showing some pain and no doubt it was a drag with the wind stiffening.  Everyone was now suffering but Rob hung tough and stayed in touch with the 3 hour pacer. The winner came in at 2:41. 2nd place was 2:43 and the third place male finished in 2:50. The first place woman finished in 2:53.  Could Rob make 3 hours???  A distant goal and a very tough one since he had only run 2 marathons and they were 3:11 and 3:12 (PF Chang and Boston).

Here comes Rob up the last hill and turning toward the finish...It looked like he would be just over 3 hours - but maybe he could pick up the difference in chip time??  So close!  After this all out effort, Rob almost went down and we struggled to get him to the massage tent and get some food and drink into him.  As Rob was recovering, I went to the results and saw that he had a 3:00:23 finish and 3:00:14 chip time!  Rob had set a huge PR.  Even better, he finished 17th overall, 15th male and WON HIS AGE CLASS ---- 1st of 125!!

Of the races I have seen that included members of our group - this ranks up there with Heidi Schuette's Olympic trail race in Boston (Apr 2008) and Dan Pemble's Boston marathon the next day. I will never forget seeing Dan coming down Boylston street finishing something like 385th of 25,000 in 2:46/2:47.  This coming the day after watching Heidi running in a middle pack in the Olympic trials as I recall looking at my watch at mile 14 and calculating in my head that she was running a 6:08 pace.  I did it 3 times in my head coming up with the same number.  I was in shock.

Rob has only been running a couple years.  He keeps getting better.  I wish I could have run today but I'll get another shot at Boston (with Rob) complete with a "Boy's week out" trip including Rob, my car buddy Dave Zelman who is entering the 5K the day before, hopefully my Minnesota running buddy, Jeff Kathan who has flown in and now run more Whiskey Row marathons than me - since I missed this years event due to the proximity and pains caused by Boston last April. Jeff will do the 5K too and I am still working on Steve Orth returning for another Boston 5K where he did so well this spring!

I have been pumped all day and I didn't even run.  I had to get ths writing so I can settle down.  This was Rob's day.  This was Kathy and Serena's big day too.  I hope tomorrow is your big day.  Keep trying.  Before today, I was ready to chuck it after having so many injuries this year.  After returning to the Tucson marathon, I am so jazzed that you will have to shoot me to keep me from returning and being better than ever.

Rob, you are THE MAN.  It was worth the price of admission to see you cruise for 20 and then totally gut out the rest.  Nice job, my friend.  Ken out.

ROB SAYS HE IS TIRED OF SEEING THE SAME OLD STUFF!!

So - we better add some news items.

1) Congrats to Dan Munsell for completing his 3rd marathon this past Saturday.  Should we give hime credit for 4 since he went way past marathon distance in the 50 mile Man vs. Horse??  Dan competed in the Mesquite (NV) marathon that crossed into 3 states.

2) Many thanks to Steve and Rob for carrying our banner in the 5 mile run last Saturday at Precott High to raise food for the foodbank.  Our amigo Walter Bircham put on the event.  Both Rob and Steve finished high enough to get free breakfast coupons at Waffles and More...Rob won the race by a chunk!

3) Rob and I are about to take a few week break in the Tuesday speedwork sessions.  We WILL be there this Tuesday.  Erika, Trayce and Steve have joined us on occasion.  We will still have the Thursday Peavine runs at 4:30PM (and of course a trip to In and Out burger for anyone that wants to join me and Steve).

4) Heidi had her baby.  All is well.  She will be back running soon.  Heidi and Tim were at the Peavine last Thurs - Tim ran with me while Steve "tapered" for the Food Run and walked with Heidi.

5) The Tucson marathon fast approaches.  Rob keeps clicking off 18-20 milers in training at a very quick pace.   Ken (me) is trying a new approach..."lack of any decent training"...One failed attempt after another while trying to get in long runs. This is painful.  The injuries from the summer set me back and I just can't get anything going...so I will simply show up and run/walk the race...it will be ugly but hey - #6 below is more important...

6) Only 3 people from the area qualified (or chose to enter) the Boston marathon for 2010.   Rob Turpin, Brigette Schiess and me.   Brigette runs with the morning group.  Amazingly the race filled the 25,000 capacity on January 31st for the 2009 edition - the earliest ever.  Neither Rob nor I would have gotten to run the race last April if the race filled up as fast as it did this year...it closed to entries on November 13th! 25,000 crazies and half a million spectators.  This is one memorable race. Dave Zelman, Jeff Kathan and hopfully Steve Orth will all be going to Boston for a Boys Week Away.  Jeff has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged Dave and Steve in the Sunday 5K which finishes with the same run down Boylston street.  I can't wait to take pics!   I still remember seeing Heidi in 2008 in the Olympic trials held in Boston and the next day seeing Dan Pemble running an incredible 2:46ish marathon finishing 385th of 25,000 - are you kidding me??  They inspired me to qualify and run this year. I proved that it isn't about running talent because I have very little.  I did it with hard work.

7) We celebrated Mike Zengel's 50th birthday a few weeks ago.  We also had Steve-O's 50th celebration this summer...Both were fun parties as was Heidi's baby shower party.

8) The Ragnar group will be back for 2010 as well. That is one sick SICK group headed by Dan Munsell and Deb Cowell.  Thanks again to Mike for getting the entry covered.  The race will start in Prescott again!!

Hope to see everyone soon.  Run softly (and fast) out there... Ken out.

Chino Valley 10K
Written by Dan
Sunday, 06 September 2009

Chino Valley held their annual 10K on 9/5/09 the weather was the best I've seen at this event for the last 3 years.  Overcast, cool, just a slight breeze from the north.

Those mountain milers that showed up once again brought home the hardware.

I've added a new section to the center menu for local races.  This will be the home for race results from Chino Valley and Skull Valley.

Newsflash

Heidi Schuette was given a "little" surprise sendoff by the entire Lincoln School student body and all the teachers today, April 15th - they faked an assembly to honor Tax Day?  (I am not quite viewing that as an honor but I think Heidi was quite surprised!)

I HOPE EVERYONE GOT TO SEE HEIDI'S PIC ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE THURS (4/17) COURIER!!!

Students got dressed up, a mock torch was run into the overflowing auditorium by a Lincoln student, Heidi was presented with several gifts and even the Pioneer Press was in attendance!

I can't imagine anyone deserving this more as Heidi is a friend to everyone and not just one of the most talented runners we will ever meet - she is the highest of "HIGH CLASS".  I am probably as excited to go to Boston this weekend to see her run as she is running!  Of course, there is a little more pressure on her - but hey I have pressure on me too - making sure I have the camera ready!

NOW THIS WAS A COOL DAY!!  Even better than one of those "dream" training runs that most of us have rather frequently!  Some of us have frequently?  OK, so maybe we only have once a year if ever????

Good luck Heidi - just running with the best marathoners in the country is special beyond anything I could say here.

This is not an afterthought but congrats to Dan and Serena who qualified for the Boston marathon this year and will be running the day after Heidi's Olympic trails race!  I haven't seen Serena for awhile but I know Dan Pemble is ready and will run a super race - no more 33 mile Grand Canyon training runs till after the race, Dan.
