New Day for Peavine
Written by Dan
Monday, 17 August 2009

Well it looks like the votes favored switching to Thursday for our group Peavine runs...Erika was the only one with a problem.  We need to find another way to keep Erika active with the group...Sat runs or Tuesday speedwork?

For this week - we will meet at 5:30PM but with the days getting shorter quickly, we need to talk about a slow movement to an earlier start.  For the runners making it this week - can you please discuss that item.

One other note Mammoth Graphics at the mall has the Mountain Milers logo in their system now.  If anybody is interested a two color (4" x 7") is about $15, they are scalable so you can go larger if you'd like.  Below is a picture of mine on the rear window (I swear the window was clean when I took the picture).

Upcoming Races and congrats to Steve on winning the Sr. Olympics 10k!

Two of our favorites are coming up and registration is open.  Why are they our favorites?  The Mountain Milers usually bring home a lot of hardware.

First up is Chino Valley's Territorial Days on 9/5.  Register online here , or download the Entry. This race benefits the Chino Valley cross country team, and you get the bonuses of a parade and pancake breakfast after.

Next is Groom Creek on 9/26.  Registration online or mail in.  This year they have added a half-marathon to the choices of 5K, 10K or 2 mile fun runs, the cool morning run just up the hill from Goldwater Lake is a great way to start the fall racing season.

Finally 10/3 Man Against Horse.  Mail in registration is here. With 12, 25 and 50 mile courses there are plenty of challenges.  Three to five of us plan to go for the coveted belt buckles this year.

Lastly, on Friday Jul 24 Steve Orth won his first race, the 10K Sr. Olympics held on the tough Brownlow trail.  Steve dropped into 2nd fairly early and followed the leader, closing and dropping back to as much as a quarter mile but he put on the famous "Steve Blast" with a couple hundreds yards to go and ran him down on the last hill with about 100 yards to go winning the race by no more than a couple yards!  Way to go Steve!  Deb Cowell finished 4th overall and first female!  Way to go Sr. Mountain Milers!!

Newsflash

I am sure most all of you have heard that Gheral Brownlow passed on Monday 3/24.  For stories on Gheral go to www.dcourier.com and put "brownlow" in the search field.

We lost one of our Prescott running mates and the man who started most of the local races.  Steve Orth and I were lucky enough to meet with Gheral just 14 days prior to his passing.   He still looked and sounded super.

If our running club has a goal, it should be to make sure that Gheral is not forgotten by making sure that the races here stay intact.   He will be missed.  Services info:

A vigil service and time of sharing will be 6 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Prescott.

A mass and Celebration of Life service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Church in Prescott, Ariz.
