Awesome MM runners Heidi and Dan star in St. George! Steve and Ken tackle Man vs. Horse

Heidi Schuette turned in a superb 2:46 marathon in St. George just missing the top 5 five women by about a minute.   Wow - this is fast!  A terrific course to say the least but a 2:46 is unreal!! I am anxious to hear all about it.

Dan Pemble wasn't far behind running a fantastic 2:53 and erasing a few bad thoughts from previous marathons where he had medical problems.  Way to go Dan!  You are still 'da man!!

In a little sadder note Steve Orth (with me pacing) took on the 50 mile Man Vs. Horse race.  Before I give you the news - I must say that Steve ran a stellar race that included blisters and a wrong turn.  Above that, this is not just the toughest tract I have ever run, it is the toughest track I have ever heard of and if you ever consider doing a 50 miler - don't make this your first one - it is simply TOO HARD.  (The 25 mile version and 12 mile versions are both acceptably challenging courses but the 50 miler is in a different league.

Steve and I took off and were way ahead of schedule up to the 16 mile mark with me watching the time and keeping us from going out too fast.  Steve was having a little trouble at this point - which is going to happen off and on in an ultra...I can assure you he felt better than I did through miles 23-29!  So after the 16 mile aid station, I should have been watching for the ribbons but I was spacing out feeling good and I missed a turn which sent us up into a logging camp and we lost 20 minues by the time we got back. Follow that with a 15 minute aid station break at the 20 mile point for some foot maintenance for Steve and we had given back most of our cushion on the really stringent 12 hour race cutoff (with a 43 mile cutoff time of 10.5 hours).

We got going on the one decent downhill from 23 to 29 - otherwise we seemed to be climbing all day or going down some incredibly rough downhill that we could "skip through" at best.  Miles 29-32 are a 2000 foot climb up the Jerome side of Mingus Mountain.  The 2nd of 3 miles was fairly even.  So figure two one mile climbs of 1000 feet each in the warm sun.  It took 1:25 minutes with 5 rests stops to do 3 miles!  Yikes!

So now we had to hustle and with rough rocky, downhills, we missed the 43 mile cutoff by 12 minutes.  A big bummer but again I have to say that Steve ran super and I only wish that it had been a "reasonable" race as he would have easily finished under 12 hours - even though most 50 milers have a 13 or 14 hour cutoff!  I apoligize publicly to Steve for missing that turnoff at 16.5 miles, that alone would have been enough to get us home in time with a 1000 foot drop in the last 7 miles.

Ok, here are some very important things...

1)  Becky just got her LPN and I wanted to pass that along to everyone.  Congrats Becky - that is awesome - we hope you return to our group soon.

2)  On 9/12 we will have a 6PM Peavine run - then we will move it to 5:30 for the remainder of September - than we will move back to PHS in October.

3)  We wish Steve Orth, Heidi and Tim Schuette good luck this weekend in the 17 mile Imogene Pass race.

Also- Barbara, Debbie and I are planning to "crew" for Steve in the 50 mile Man Against Horse on 10/6 - if you wish to participate in helping Steve - let me know.  Who is bringing the Bud Light for Steve at the 38 mile checkpoint?

4) It is Ragnar Relay planning time and we are setting up a dinner meeting at Gurley St. Grill on Friday 9/28.  Details to follow.  Here's your chance if you missed last years awesome inaugural event.

5) Good luck to the many who are entered in the PV race this weekend (up to half marathon) and let's get a good group to Groom Creek the following Saturday.  I will be in Groom Creek making a rare local appearance and I plan to take pics for the website before the race.

6) I have new articles from Ultra Magazine for anyone wishing to step up into the Ultra world with me. It is indeed a new dimension that you will never forget.  You may even learn why you need Maltodextrin. No - it is not the same as Malt-O-Meal Barbara and Debbie....

7)  We still need donations to cover our MM sponsorship of the Whiskey Row Marathon. If you wish to donate, please send a check to the YMCA care of Jessica.  Thanks all.

Lastly, I challenge everyone to put in an extra run this week.  Your reward?  You'll be able to eat a Hostess Cupcake and still not gain weight.  Please make sure it is a cupcake and not a Twinkie - I don't want Fry's running out Twinkies for me.  AND keep training even if you don't make our events - we are thinking of all of you and wishing for nothing but PR's.  Be well.  Ken

Welcome to Mountain Milers - UPDATED 7/11/06!

Welcome back Sport Fans!  I have started a few short tests before turning over the new site to Jessica for updating and to the Portland Lakers to do the same.  I hope most of you saw Barb's note on why we needed to make the changes to the website including giving us some cool new functionality plus the updates were getting slower under the old "Sitebuilder".

I will be at Mile Hi tomorrow (Tues) at 5:30PM - look forward to seeing you all- it has been awhile.   A couple quick notes,  Greta is on the mend.  I ran into Kathy on Hassayampa Village LN yesterday and I had heard she was at our run last week which is fantastic as everyone has missed her.  Phil and Ellen are doing great other than spending too much time training me, perhaps I can be taken as a dependent deduction on their taxes this year???  Many personal thanks to both of them.  Lastly, Heidi is also on the mend.  She asked me or Jessica  to post this on the site:

I am supposed to be on a relay team for hood to coast in August.  Due to
lack of training, I will not be able to do the relay.  Do you or anyone you
know want to do the relay?  We are actually in need of approx. 3 runners.
The team is very fun.  We are not too competitive.  The dates are August 25
and 26th.  The runners would have to fly into Portland.  I guess they could
drive if they would like to.  You can check out the website at
www.hoodtocoast.com and our team is called the Good Girls and the Bad Boys.
It is a great opportunity.  There is a lottery for this relay.  I will be
going up to volunteer.  Please put this out to the MM's. Anyone can contact me if interested at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it    208-683-2560.

Contact Heidi if you can do it... You don't have to be an ultra runner to help the team cover 190+ miles - you only have to have a small amount of brain damage...just kidding.   Great opportunity in a beautiful place.

OK Mountain Milers.   It's time to" Rock 'N Roll" and to" Reach out and touch someone" (hey - keep it clean Steve!).   See ya!

 Ken out.

The Mountain Milers, a running and walking club started in 2005, was created to help individuals improve their fitness in new and fun ways. We welcome anyone who wants to come out and have fun with us on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. See the "calendar" for more details on location/times.

We are extremely fortunate to be led by Phil Wharton, World Class Marathon runner, author of 4 books, published monthly in Runner's World magazine and a certified performance trainer. In addition to his credentials, Phil is a World Class guy.

Newsflash

Heidi Schuette was given a "little" surprise sendoff by the entire Lincoln School student body and all the teachers today, April 15th - they faked an assembly to honor Tax Day?  (I am not quite viewing that as an honor but I think Heidi was quite surprised!)

I HOPE EVERYONE GOT TO SEE HEIDI'S PIC ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE THURS (4/17) COURIER!!!

Students got dressed up, a mock torch was run into the overflowing auditorium by a Lincoln student, Heidi was presented with several gifts and even the Pioneer Press was in attendance!

I can't imagine anyone deserving this more as Heidi is a friend to everyone and not just one of the most talented runners we will ever meet - she is the highest of "HIGH CLASS".  I am probably as excited to go to Boston this weekend to see her run as she is running!  Of course, there is a little more pressure on her - but hey I have pressure on me too - making sure I have the camera ready!

NOW THIS WAS A COOL DAY!!  Even better than one of those "dream" training runs that most of us have rather frequently!  Some of us have frequently?  OK, so maybe we only have once a year if ever????

Good luck Heidi - just running with the best marathoners in the country is special beyond anything I could say here.

This is not an afterthought but congrats to Dan and Serena who qualified for the Boston marathon this year and will be running the day after Heidi's Olympic trails race!  I haven't seen Serena for awhile but I know Dan Pemble is ready and will run a super race - no more 33 mile Grand Canyon training runs till after the race, Dan.
